tenor, flute, oboe, clarinet, tenor saxophone, and bassoon (about 12 minutes)
In composing Calico Pie, and Other Nonsense (2024) for the Stones River Chamber Players' concert dedicated to humor in music, Paul Osterfield set poetry of Edward Lear, who is known for his whimsical limericks and other nonsense poems. At the center of the work is as setting of Lear's Calico Pie (1871) for tenor, flute, oboe, clarinet, tenor saxophone, and bassoon. Flanking this poem are settings of seven limericks from Lear's 1846 and 1872 collections, the outer limericks set for the entire ensemble, and each of the others for the vocalist with one instrumentalist.
