CRIMSON SUN AND BLACK LIGHTNING
solo soprano saxophone (about 9 minutes)
Crimson Sun and Black Lightning (2005), a four-movement work for solo soprano saxophone, was written for saxophonist Edward Orgill. The first movement is malleable, with flowing rhythms, undulating dynamics, and is replete with glissandos. The second movement, in contrast, is faster with crisp rhythms and is dance-like and somewhat playful. The third movement shifts to a fluid, lyrical, contemplative aria. The finale increases intensity, culminating in a rip-roaring climax.
