string orchestra (about 6 minutes)
I composed Elegy (2022) for string orchestra in memory of one of my dear friends, Christine Kim, who lost her battle with cancer. Christine was the cello professor where I teach, and she performed several of my works. A couple weeks after another dear friend, Andrea Dawson, asked me to compose a work for the Middle Tennessee State University Chamber Orchestra, I was at Chrissy's visitation, along with other colleagues and Chrissy's students. At that moment, I decided to write the Elegy not only as a tribute to Chrissy, but also for our school's community. The faculty and staff had lost a dear colleague. Another dear friend of mine, Arunesh Nadgir, lost his soulmate. But what really resonated with me is that our students lost a beloved professor and mentor, who was a wonderful and demanding teacher, yet always very kind and gentle with everyone.
