solo flute with optional narrator (about 9 minutes)
Every month when my daughter was in preschool, she received a book in the mail from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. Each book is written by a different author. One of my daughter's and my favorites is a book that Ms. Parton wrote, "I Am a Rainbow," a colorful book that teaches kids that everyone has different emotions, and it's okay to have various feelings at different times. About a month after my daughter received this book, flutist Deanna Little approached me about participating in her project, in which she would commission seven Tennessee composers to write a work that involves flute and is influenced in some way by the work of Dolly Parton. Rather than taking inspiration from one of Ms. Parton's songs, I wrote I Am a Rainbow (2014), which reflects the variety of colors and moods that Ms. Parton describes in her book.
