Jagged Edges (2004), a three-movement work for piccolo and piano, was written for flutist Lisa A. Jelle. The first movement's changing meters and disjunct melody create a feeling of skittish anxiety and unrest. The second movement explores the lyrical sultry sound of the piccolo in its lowest register. The quirky final movement exploits the agile nature of both instruments.
