oboe, horn, and piano (about 11 minutes)
Portobello Ritornello With a Shot of Limoncello (2020) for oboe, horn, and piano is a work intended to be quirky and fun. I wrote this work for three performers who have premiered several of my works, and I wanted this to be a vehicle for them that would showcase their musical and technical abilities while maintaining a proper lack of decorum. The form of the Baroque ritornello frames the work, with the repeating sections highlighting the quirkiness and each interlude spotlighting a different member of the trio as a soloist.
Regarding the title, the only aspect that refers to the work itself is the word "ritornello." In keeping with the quirky theme, I chose the other words that rhymed with ritornello. Given the title, I certainly do not condone underage drinking of alcohol, anyone drinking and driving or operating heavy machinery, or even drinking and texting your ex. These are all bad ideas. Also, the title does not imply that I am endorsing portobellos, as I am not particularly wild about mushrooms.
