tenor and piano (about 10 minutes)
Songs of Love (2005) was inspired by Kim, the woman that I was dating at the time, who is now my wife and mother of my daughter. When we were first dating, we were flipping through channels on the television, and we stopped on some cheesy show or movie where a teenage girl was freaking out because her boyfriend wrote her a song. Kim turned to me and said that she would like having a song written for her. At the time, I was about to set Ernest Thayer's Casey at the Bat, but then I changed my mind. My plans to keep the love song cycle a secret were foiled when Kim noticed the texts to the love songs on my piano - in plain sight. Songs of Love is a song cycle of five poems written by four poets: William Butler Yeats, Emily Dickinson, Robert Browning, and Robert Herrick. Each song explores a different aspect of love.
