violin and violoncello (about 14 minutes)
Zyzzyva Escapades (2013) is a fun, quirky work that was composed for Andrea Dawson (who titled the individual movements) and Christine Kim. The work starts with Three-Legged Dog Boogie, which moves at a brisk pace, but has an off-kilter rhythmic feel. The second movement, Ghost Fish, contrasts with slow, serene, lyrical music, with occasional glistening textures. Bovine Tango features a silky, sultry melody with a more rhythmically rigid harmonic backdrop. Avian Interlude is more of a conversation between the two performers. Using glassy-sounding harmonics, the performers pass several contrasting motives back and forth. The finale, Komodo Dragon Romp, closed with a heavy-handed, yet moderately fast, dance.
